ECETI Ranch: History and Paranormal Claims

First, a quick note: The ECETI Ranch (Enlightened Contact with Extraterrestrial Intelligence) is located in Trout Lake, Washington, at the base of Mount Adams. I camped at ECETI back in 2012 and did have an experience with something heavy, loud, and fast. I will share that experience in another post.

The ranch is a well-known UFO hotspot in the Pacific Northwest, near the Oregon border. If this isn't the intended site, there doesn't appear to be an ECETI Ranch in Oregon based on available records.

History and Founding

The ranch, also known as Gilliland's Ranch or Sattva Sanctuary, was established in 1986 by James Gilliland, a self-proclaimed contactee, author, and spiritual teacher. Gilliland's journey began after a near-death experience, which led him to study various religions, spiritual practices (including Eastern philosophies like Taoism and Buddhism), and claims of extraterrestrial contact. He founded the Self-Mastery Earth Institute on the property to promote self-empowerment, heightened consciousness, and "enlightened contact" with benevolent higher-dimensional beings. The site has roots in Native American lore, with the area around Mount Adams long considered sacred and associated with spiritual energies or vortices—portals of powerful energy that Gilliland claims amplify paranormal phenomena.

By 2003, the ranch began hosting organized UFO sighting events, drawing visitors from around the world. It operates seasonally (typically June to September) as a retreat center with lodging options like cabins, yurts, and camping. Gilliland has hosted skywatch weekends, lectures, and meditative sessions, often tying into broader UFO disclosure movements (e.g., references to Dr. Steven Greer and The Disclosure Project). The property includes unique features like a yak herd (symbolic in Tibetan culture) and signs declaring it a "sovereign nation," emphasizing its mystical and independent ethos.

Controversies include skepticism from mainstream science, with critics viewing the claims as unverified or potentially hoaxed. No formal scientific investigations are documented, but Gilliland has faced accusations of censorship or opposition from "dark forces" suppressing ET knowledge. Despite this, the ranch has been featured in documentaries like ECETI Ranch Stargate: The UFO-Bigfoot Connection (2025), exploring its multi-faceted phenomena.

Reported Paranormal Activity

ECETI Ranch is renowned as an international "UFO and paranormal hotspot," with thousands of visitor reports over decades. Gilliland claims frequent interactions with extraterrestrials from higher dimensions (e.g., Andromedans and 8th-dimensional beings), channeled during meditations.

Key phenomena include:

  • UFO Sightings and Orbs: Visitors often report unidentified flying objects, described as zipping lights, spaceships that respond to laser pointers, or orbs that appear in response to thoughts or heightened consciousness. In one 2013 group visit, participants saw lights doubling in size, collapsing, or zipping across the sky—sometimes interpreted as meteors but claimed as ET craft dropping material. Photos and videos of "nature spirits" or orbs have been captured, with the site's vortex amplifying these events.
  • ET Contacts and Energy Experiences: During guided sessions, people report feeling calm, light, peaceful energies, or physical healings (e.g., improved back pain). Gilliland's radio shows and lectures feature voice analyses of UFO clips and claims of benevolent beings promoting love and self-mastery.
  • Bigfoot and Cryptid Connections: The ranch ties into Sasquatch lore, with recent documentaries exploring a "UFO-Bigfoot connection" at the site. Visitors have shared stories of Bigfoot encounters in the surrounding forests, blending ET and cryptid phenomena—suggesting Sasquatch may be interdimensional or linked to UFOs.
  • Other Phenomena: Reports of nature spirits, light patterns, and vortex energies that induce spiritual awakenings. No major ghost or poltergeist activity is emphasized, focusing instead on uplifting, consciousness-expanding events.

The Batsquatch: A Regional Cryptid

While not directly reported at ECETI Ranch, the Batsquatch is a notable Pacific Northwest cryptid from the same volcanic region (near Mount St. Helens, about 50 miles west of Mount Adams), potentially tying into the area's broader paranormal lore. First whispered about after the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption (which some speculate "released" it), the creature is described as a 9-foot-tall hybrid of bat and Sasquatch: wolf- or fox-bat-like head with sharp teeth, tufted ears, glowing eyes (yellow or red), blue-gray fur, massive leathery wings (spanning roadways or 50 feet), and bird-like claws.

Key sightings:

  • Post-1980: Vague reports of a thunderbird-like beast emerging from ash clouds.
  • 1994 (Brian Canfield): Near Mount Rainier, a teen's truck stalled as the creature landed, stared, and flew off.
  • 1994 (Butch Whittaker): Pilot spotted it tailing his plane.
  • 2009 (Mount Shasta, CA): Hikers saw a cave-dwelling winged giant.
  • 2011 (Washington): Nighttime flyover with red eyes.

The Batsquatch draws from Native American thunderbird tales and parallels other flying cryptids like Mothman. While not linked to ECETI, its proximity and Sasquatch-like traits fit the region's UFO-cryptid overlap, as explored in local documentaries.
